Stormtroopers visit Cabot Circus, Bristol.

May the 4th Be With You!

I was waiting for a trio of Stormtroopers to turn up at Cabot Circus shopping centre as part of a ‘May the 4th Be With You’ shopping promotion when my charming PR liason Gabby, tells me she has never seen Star Wars.

“Sorry, you’ve never actually seen Star Wars?”

“No why?”

“Not even the crappy ones?”

She shrugs

“ Well my dad’s told me about it”

“Told you!”

She’s trying not to laugh at my incredulousness.

I’m sorry but there are some rites of passage a father has to make sure his offspring endure. A generation weaned on Pixar, Harry Potter and CGI have to witness the opening of ‘A New Hope”.  I made bloody sure my daughters did (many times).

The Stormtroopers arrived in boxes. That is to say the costumes were in boxes alongside three budding potential Stormtroopers ranging in size from 5’6’’ to 6’2’’.  We spent the next 40 minutes trying to figure out how it all went together like some enormous Kinder Surprise toy.

As with the movies we got everything together in the nick of time and spent a very pleasant hour wondering around Cabot Circus with old and young enjoying the spectacle.

Of course Gabby’s sorry lack of knowledge could be amended when the new JJ Abrams’ film arrives and a new generation is introduced to the Star Wars phenomenon. Maybe then she might understand why numerous dads pretended to shield their kids from the Stormtroopers while saying “These are not the droids you are looking for” before walking of with a chuckle and their bemused offspring in tow.
