James Bay, Bristol Summer Series 2016, Lloyds Amphitheatre, Bristol.
Don’t get to photograph many gigs these days.
Finishing a late Bristol Post shift with front row access to the likes of Alabama 3, Orbital, Gomez, Simple Kid, Macabees, Paolo Nutini and McBusted (yes McBusted) is a rare event. Imagine my delight when I got the shift to cover James Bay at the Bristol Summer Series (I had to imagine it). I’m not a James Bay fan, not through a dislike of his material, I’m merely unfamiliar with his repertoire. I think I know one of his songs and that he wears hats.
Not that this mattered. I find photographing gigs means I’m usually oblivious to the songs being performed, even if I’m a fan. I’m too busy sweating over backlighting exposure, iso ratings, shutter speeds and whether I would be better off standing over there.
Even so the set had a good buzz and he was animated enough to make photographing him rewarding (Jake Bugg anyone). Most importantly the sell out crowd enjoyed themselves.
